Snix and the Incredible Board-Off
Sunday, September 30th... It's been a long time since any updates. Oh well...too much saiing goin' on. I did get some distant shots on Sunday of something I hoped I'd never see happen.
Seems a couple of guys and a gal, for whatever crazy reason, decided to launch a big ol' blowup kite out at the end of "Fisherman Point." That's the rock pile you don't want to sail too near to because the fishermen like to throw garbage, bottles, firecrackers or whatever at windsurfers who sail too close to their lines. Must have been the first time these kite folks flew such an unwieldy beast and I guess they didn't get the safety memo about not flying directly over people's heads or in the middle of a bunch of trees, nor did they understand that almost any wind direction is offshore from this heap of rock slabs.
I was just getting ready to leave the Coyote parking lot after a good day of sailing when I saw their kite in the water...looked like they had already crashed it once and were trying to retrieve it when all of a sudden (as most things happen in kiteland) it got to the edge of the window and powered up like an out-of-control freight train.
The guy holding the bar got yanked so hard that his pals had to grab on to save his sorry self from a rude dunking in the bay. Oh yeah, did I mention that none of the three was wearing a wetsuit. The three stooges were doing a three way bump and grind at the edge of the point trying to get control of each other and the kite (which obviously had control over them.)
They finally pulled the kiteflyer back between the trees and landed the kite on the edge of the levee. I thought they had enough and maybe learned some kind of lesson...but after making an adjustment to something they launched that puppy again and immediately got pulled left and right trying to get it to neutral. At one point the lines buzzed a fisherman so closely that he almost jumped off the levee in an effort to get out of the way. A man walking with two kids had to run to avoid being nailed by the wildly flown kite and lines.
For more than half an hour this crashing, dragging and carelessly dangerous stuff went on and I decided to leave before I had to witness any actual carnage. These guys were beyond stupid!

March 2002...a lot of cold wind and some extremely low tides have made for an interesting month at Coyote. Several days of more kites on the water than windsurfers. It's warmed up considerably for Easter weekend and with the warming, well...there went the wind. Waddaya gonna do?
Feb 2002...since SNix hasn't offered up any photos from Baja ...there's nothing more to say... Baja not!

The good news is...2001 is finally over. The bad news is...looks like it's gonna rain until forever, and there's nothing new or exciting happening here.
There's been some wind at the coast and a bit on the bay (nothin' like a good dunk in murky storm runoff gunk) and the hardier souls have taken advantage of it. For now, we're looking forward to the boy's Baja adventure. I expect the "Steve Cam" will capture it all...stay tuned.
