rumors and nonsense 2005
What's the weather?

Hints and allegations, rumor and innuendo, that's what it's all about...
This page is dedicated to our windsurfing friends at Coyote Point, 3rd. Ave. and points beyond.

November 11...Our friends Mark and Thip Paine have opened their new Bonaire bed and breakfast house, Villa Bientu. The accommodations and pricing look great! Hope to have a chance to check it out in person. Congrats and best of luck to them.

October 15...Been away from the Bay Area for a couple of months and missed much of the end of the season, but life goes on. In my absence, Thomas K broke his back (we won't discuss how) but is on the mend. Read about his experience on his blog.
Great news for the sport...dads, moms aunts and uncles have been out in record numbers teaching their little ones to windsurf at Coyote.

August 7th, Coyote Point...just another day on the Bay. pics here...

Aug 5th, thank you Thomas for cleaning the Coyote Cam window. Now we can actually see what's going on :-)

July 28th, Coyote Point...as always, Coyote is a hotbed of windsurfing activity. Dave Taylor's been working on his body drags...link to video (1.7MB QT) here...

Seal Point Park...what are they thinking???

Stopped by to check out the new "windsurf and kayak" launch built by the city of San Mateo at the recently opened Seal Point Park. The park is located approximately half way between Coyote Point and the 3rd. Ave. launch. It's built atop an old landfill and appears as a massive straw-covered mound overlooking the Bay. The view from the top is stunning on a clear day. (click here for a view south to the 3rd. Ave. sail/kite area. 1MB file)

Seal Point and the adjacent Ryder Park are part of San Mateo's Shoreline Parks Master Plan. The area includes sheltered picnic facilities, an outdoor classroom, water-themed play spaces, a wetland overlook, a dog park, Bay and secondary trails, concrete pathways, rest rooms and a large parking lot. The windsurf and kayak launch facility is beautiful but unfortunately, for windsurfing purposes...PRACTICALLY USELESS. By design the access would have windsurfers and kayakers schlep their gear from the parking lot, situated on the 3rd. Ave. side of the mound, around the heap along a dirt path then down stairs or a narrow concrete ramp to the water. It's obvious that a lot of time, effort and a HUGE amount of money was expended to create this access point...but the point is...THE ACCESS STINKS! If you have any comments feel free to send them.

July 4th '05, Coyote Point...in the interest of science, I decided to strap on the 'Helmet Cam' and do a little Bay stalking. Reports were that the wind was up outside and it was clear that SNix was going to launch a kite. Unfortunately, being camera shy, he was dead-set on staying inside where there was barely a whitecap.
Lots of things to do to improve this toy...I mean, tool...

June 23, Coyote Pt...Ann and Kathleen stopped by Coyote for their annual windsurf trip. While the city was shrouded in winter, the wind was light and southwest at CP. I missed Kathleen but Ann agreed to ham for the cam.

IMHO...for those of you still sitting on the fence about taking kiting lessons...after much time observing the different local school approaches to lessons on the Bay, Team Coyote recommends the jetski assisted programs from WOW at Coyote and KiteWindSurf at Alameda. After watching land-based lessons at Coyote for 2 seasons it seems that most of the student's time is spent walking back upwind and relatively little time in the water. Land-based lessons, particularly at Coyote, are limited by inside wind strength, often flukey direction and obstacles in and out of the Bay (think large pilings and power lines.) Jetski assisted lessons bring the student to the wind no matter what the direction and keep the student away from those dangerous obstacles.
If you're looking for the most bang for you kite-lesson buck think jetski.
June 5th, Coyote point...BIG SUNDAY...28 to 48 knots had the boyz on sub-4s. A whole lotta splashin' goin' on.

Big Sunday at Coyote
May 27th at Coyote...on (virtual) paper (Ken Poulton's weather page) the conditions looked great, but in reality most folks who went out said it was "challenging" to have fun in the holes. Today was opening day for some and just another day at the office for many.

Some pics here...

May 27th at Coyote
Sunday, May 22nd at Coyote...west winds from 26 to 39 knots on the outside and sometimes near calm on the inside made gear selection critical, particularly for the big guys. Mike I and Thomas K took schlogging to a new level.

A few shots from today here...

In the never ending search for UV protection...thus, a longer sail life...our friend Angel's research lead him to the theory that if you paint your monofilm with latex it will have an unlimited UV lifespan. And so, in the interest of science, he did...pics here

paddlefest 2005
Mark your calendars...the dates for Paddlefest 2005 have been set for September 24th and 25th. This event usually brings good wind to Coyote point. Click here for more info.

April 17th at Coyote...the wind was anywhere from 19 to 37 knots but it felt cold compared to yesterday. Instead of sailing I rigged a camera and took a few shots from the beach.

Looks like everyone had a good time, especially Mark Paine, and ASD's free demo days were a success!

April 16 and 17...ASD/Surface to Air is hosting free demo days at Coyote. The wind is good and the tide is right for plenty of space on the beach...and it's FREE!

April 2nd at Coyote Point...the season started in early March for many Bay area windsurfers. Some diehards sail year-round but most seem to wait until spring has fully sprung. Today the wind was 15 to 30 and a fine time was had by all.

Coyote Point has been relatively quiet up until now because the PST park closing hours require everyone to get out by 6pm.
Tomorrow that changes to 8pm...and that's a very good thing!

Good news… for both windsurfers and kiters at Coyote this year...ASD/Surface to Air in conjunction with Wind over Water has an entirely new kite school this season. In addition to normal land training the lessons provide on-the-water instruction using jet skis to promote safety and distance from obstacles and other sailors. This looks like a huge step in the right direction to promote goodwill between kiters and windsurfers at Coyote Point.

Spring has sprung and ASD has a new interactive webcam at their Coyote Point shop. Check it out...
